Alice Truelove Newton died on Friday, November 26 at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville.She was the daughter of Paschal Estell Truelove and Annie Jane Lawrence Truelove, the youngest of eight children.She was born in Chatham County, N.C. on May 4, 1921, and graduated from Apex High School as the valedictorian of her class.She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Fred W. Newton, in 2005.
Alice and her husband Fred owned and operated a dairy farm in Vance County from 1942 until 1998.She was known for her active role in church, family and community in Vance County.She served as President of the PTA of Aycock School, President of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Carey Baptist Church and later of the Cullom Baptist Association.She was one of the first women to serve as an ordained deacon of Carey Baptist Church, including a term as deacon chair. Other services included Sunday School teacher, chair of a
pastor search team, moderator of the Cullom Baptist Association and member of the General Board of the N.C. Baptist State Convention.
She was known for her gracious hospitality as she invited the world into her home, hosting missionaries, educators, international students and others who visited the Newton Dairy Farm. She and her husband enjoyed many dairy tours around the world with other North Carolina dairy-farming couples.In 1998 she and her husband relocated to Greenville to Cypress Glen Retirement Community, where they delighted in making new friends and being part of a vital community and active members of The Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by four children:Fred Newton, Jr. ( Lottie) of Parkersburg, WV;Dr. Dale Newton(Emmie) of Greenville, NC;Betsy Herman (Dennis) of Raleigh; and Sharon Newton of Charlotte. She is also survived by eight grandchildren:Carrie Struble (Earl) of Raleigh; Lillie Newton (Frank Guzek) of Charlotte; Alan Newton (Amy) of Greenville; Dan Newton (Megan Smith) of Burlington; David Newton (Elizabeth) Catonsville, MD; Ivan Herman (Susan) of Sacramento, CA.; Stephen Herman of Bethesda, MD;and Eleanor Herman of Denver, CO.Also surviving are ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside service with interment of ashes will be at Carey Baptist Church cemetery (1295 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, NC) on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the North Carolina Baptist Children’s Homes (P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC27361) or to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Global Missions Offering (c/o The Memorial Baptist Church, 1510 Greenville Blvd. SE, Greenville, NC 27858).
