Alice Woodlief Smith, age 88, a former resident of South Garnett Street, died Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the Whitmore Retirement Center in Oxford, NC.Born on January 27, 1927 in Kittrell, NC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Cornelius Woodlief and Beulah Moore Woodlief, and was the widow of Thomas Harrison Smith, Sr.Mrs. Smith graduated from Zebulon B. Vance High School in 1944, and earned an Associates Degree in Business from Louisburg College in 1946.She worked at J.C. Penney, Harriett & Henderson Yarns, Inc., as Assistant Clerk of Court, and at the Henderson Daily Dispatch.Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, and was Girl Scout Leader of Troop 207 from 1970 until 1978.Her most loving roles in life were as a wife, mother, grandmother, and loyal friend.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at 2 pm in the Rose Chapel at First United Methodist Church of Henderson, with the Rev. Terry Huffines officiating.The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor.A private entombment will be held at Sunset Gardens.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one daughter, Alison Smith Overton (Lindsay) of Raleigh; one son, Thomas Harrison Smith, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Holden Beach; three grandchildren, Cameron Smith, Forrest Smith, and Graham Overton of Raleigh; and one brother, Milton Woodlief of Richmond, VA.
