HENDERSON-Alma Holtzman Mathews, 92, a well known resident of Senior Citizens Home, died on Friday, August 24, 2018.Born in Warren County on June 5, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Carl Phillip and Mary Seaman Holtzman.Music was a highlight of her life and through music she emphasized the value of relationships with others.She learned to play the piano by "ear" as a child and played in a band with her father.She played a special part in some of the most important events in the lives of many peopleproviding music for worship, funerals, and over 150 weddings, all without regard to denomination, race or neighborhood.She describes her musical contributions as "using her talent for the love of God."She stated "I love to help people with my playing, it opens doors when nothing else will."Staying busy sharing her love of music, Alma played almost daily at the nursing home, was a regular pianist and organ player for a number of churches in the local area and at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Ridgeway for 65 years.She was a member of St. Pauls Church Missionary Society, a former member of the Golden Age Club of Henderson, the Henderson Exchange Club, the Vance County Rescue Auxiliary, and a retired Captain of the Civil Air Patrol.She was a graduate of the former Henderson Business College, and was employed by Roses Stores retiring after 45 years as supervisor of the Data Entry Department. Alma was also the recipient of the John T. Church Award for community service.
Alma is survived by her brother John Bernard Holtzman and wife, Hazel of Manson; sister, Jean H. Ruland and husband, Ross of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Doris Reavis and husband, Lewis of Warrenton; her nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Richard Matthews.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00 until 4:00 pm at the J. M. White Funeral Home. A remembrance of Almas life will be held in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 4:00 pm.At other times the family will be at the home of John and Hazel Holtzman at 1009 Ridgeway Drewry Rd., Manson, NC.Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Corey Brooks on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 4:00 pm at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 114 Poplar Mount Rd., Norlina, NC, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Holtzman, Jerry Holtzman, Justin Holtzman, Kyle Holtzman, Gary Morgan and Johnny Riggan.Honorary pallbearers will beJames Powell, Hal White, Joseph Gupton, Ben Reavis, Dalton Williamson, Darnell Mullinex, Claiborne Holtzman, Jack Richardson, Bubba OGeary, Larry Carroll, Randall Williams and The Vance County Rescue Squad Auxiliary.
Flowers are welcome and memorials should be directed to the music ministry of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 114 Poplar Mount Rd., Norlina NC 27563.
