HENDERSON- Alvin Curtis "Butch" Gray, III, 71, of Kerr Lake Club Drive, died Friday, May 21, 2021.Born in Vance County on April 28, 1950, he was the son of the late Alvin Curtis Gray, Jr. and Velma Gilliam Gray.He was a 1968 graduate of Henderson High School and earned a degree in turf management from NC State University.
"Butchie" loved spending time with his grandchildren.He loved golf and was an avid sports fan.He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, crossword puzzles and telling stories.He attended The Church of the Holy Innocents.
A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Elmwood Cemetery by Rev. Donald Lowery.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Gilliam Gray of the home; his daughter, Cooper Gray Tharrington and husband, Daniel of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Lucy Scott Tharrington and Crawford Gray Tharrington; his brother-in-law, Sterling G. Gilliam, Jr. and his sister-in-law, Parkie Gilliam Thomas and husband, Bo.
Serving as pallbearers will be Scrappy Taylor, Tommy Roberson, Randy Ayscue, Jerry Thompson, Jimmy Twisdale, Carson Ellis and Phil Holmes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Church of The Holy Innocents, 210 S. Chestnut St, Henderson, NC 27536 or the Vance County Animal Shelter, 1243 Brodie Road, Henderson, NC27537.
