Henderson- Henderson resident Ann Rose Allen, 90, died May9, 2017, at Windsor Point Retirement Community in Fuquay-Varina.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Henderson at 2:00 PM on May 13, 2017 officiated by the Rev. Terry Huffins.Family will receive friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Mrs. Allen will be interred at Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson, NC in a private ceremony.
Ann was born in Granville County on September 26, 1926, the first of five children born to Thomas Benton Rose Jr. and Kathryn Hunt Rose.
She graduated from Henderson High School in June of 1945.In September of 1945 she went to Stephens College in Missouri, graduating with an A.A. in May 1947.
In 1954 she married George Robert Allen, Jr., an officer in the United States Army and began the life of an Army Wife.She travelled and established households for her husband and children in Fort Benning, GA; Fort Leavenworth, KS; New Orleans, LA; Arlington, VA; Annandale, VA; Casey Key, FL; Fairfax, VA; Baumholder, Germany; Bad Vilbel, Germany; and Carlisle, PA.When her husband retired, they moved back to the place she always regarded as home, Henderson, NC.
While living in Germany, she was exceptionally active in the base chapters of the American Red Cross, receiving numerous commendations and awards from the ARC for her work in organizing blood drives, activities, and generally getting things done.Those of you who knew her are well aware that she had a lot of energy and like to organize things.
She remained an active person after her husbands retirement, involving herself in and contributing to numerous charities and organizations. She was an active participant in American Red Cross blood drives. In addition to being an avid bridge player, she was a prodigious reader, being very active in the Sans Souci Literary Club and a contributor of a multitude of books (mostly large print editions as she aged) to the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library.She was most proud of her involvement in the start-up and operation of the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Hospital and the scholarship fund for nursing students funded by the profits of the shop.In 2014 a new scholarship was established at Vance-Granville Community College by the Guild Gift Gallery to honor Mrs. Allen for her many years of service to the Guild.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Col. George R Allen, Jr., in March 1997. She is survived by her sons George Robert Allen III of Oxford, NC; and Robinson Duff Allen (Julie) of Fuquay Varina, NC; grandchildren George Robert Allen IV of Raleigh, NC; Leigh Ann Allen of Washington, DC; Daniel Thomas Allen (Erica) of Willow Springs, NC; Nicholas Robinson Allen of Fuquay Varina and great-grandchild Avery Thomas Allen of Willow Springs, NC.She is also survived by her brothers Thomas Benton Rose III (Faye) of Wilmington, NC; Paul Hunt Rose of Palmyra, VA; David Cameron Rose (Diane) of Boone, NC; and her sister Kathryn Rose Kobos (Don) of Bellaire, TX; a step-grandson Daniel Lee Foster of Greensboro, NC as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
The family gratefully acknowledges the numerous visits by Louise Dennis, Sarah Falkner and Katbird Day, and the loving care given Ann by her caretakers during her final months.
