Barbara graduated with honors from Hugh Morrison High School and attended Meredith College. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Education from East Carolina College. While attending ECU, she served as Chairman of the Women’s Judiciary, president of the Future Teachers of America, president of Cotton Hall, was a member of the Student Government Association, the Association for Childhood Educators, the Women’s Athletic Association, and the Women’s Swim Team. In 1954 she was named in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
After graduating from college, Barbara married Francis Herbert "Frank" Madigan. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in August of this year.
Barbara’s career included teaching in Raleigh; Director and Professor of Elementary Education Student Teaching at Frederick College in Chesapeake, VA; and sixth grade teacher at Vance Academy in Henderson, where she was named Teacher of the Year.
Barbara was a loving mother and adored her grandchildren. Prior to becoming disabled from lupus, she was an avid tennis player and Henderson Country Club Women’s Doubles Club Champion along with her doubles partner Kathleen Burwell. She enjoyed bridge and played in several bridge clubs. Barbara was a past member of The Sorosis Club (book club) of Henderson and the Vance County chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa.
Barbara was a member of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, belonged to the Episcopal Church Women and served on the Altar Guild.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sister, Katheryn Moore, sisters-in-law, Wayne Hart Moore and Geraldine Madigan, and brothers-in-law James A. and Thomas J. Madigan.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, Frank, are her children, David Madigan (Trisha)of Cardinal, Va., Tracy Madigan of Henderson, NC, and Paul Madigan (Emilie) of Murfreesboro, TN; her grandchildren, Ali Boland (Zach), Kendall Madigan, Michael Madigan (Jenny), Chloe Madigan, Natalie Madigan, Sophia Madigan, Elizabeth Madigan and Isabella Madigan; her great-grandson Chase Boland; her brother, Thomas Moore, Jr. (Betty Jean), her sister-in-law Pam Madigan and nieces and nephews.
The Right Reverend Donald Lowery will conduct an inurnment of ashes service at The Columbarium of The Church of The Holy Innocents for the immediate family. Due to COVID-19, a Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Barbara’s honor to The Church of The Holy Innocents, 210 S. Chestnut St, Henderson, NC 27536 or the charity of one’s choice.
