Barbara Nethery Riggan

HENDERSON- Barbara Jane Nethery Riggan, 83, of Hedrick Drive, died Monday, August 7, 2023 at Hock Family Pavilion. Born August 22, 1939 in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Janie Young Averette Nethery and James Woodrow Nethery, Sr. She retired from the Vance County School System where she worked as a library media clerk. Barbara was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and taught in the nursery and primary department there for many years. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 11, 2023 at Island Creek Baptist Church at 11:00 A.M. by Rev. Johnny Yount. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Barbara is survived by her husband, John James “Johnny” Riggan of the home; a daughter, Jona R. Gilliam of Wake Forest; a son, Randy M. Riggan of Townsville; four grandchildren, Sarah M. Riggan, Allison C. Riggan, Olivia M. Gilliam and Sterling G. Gilliam, III; a brother, James W. Nethery, Jr. and wife, Kay of Henderson; and a sister, Bettie N. Edwards and husband, Bill of Henderson. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of Island Creek Baptist Church and at other times at the home, 891 Hedrick Drive, Henderson, NC 27537. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Branch, Lee Chandler, Bradley Edwards, Bryan Edwards, Patrick Nethery and Scott Nethery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Rd, Henderson, NC 27537, in memory of Barbara and her dedication to the children of the church.
