KITTRELL-Betsy Ann Watkins Simpson, 76, a resident of 1535 N. Chavis Road, died Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness.
Born on April 14, 1940 Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Robert A. Watkins and Louise Fuller Watkins, and was the widow of Gerald Simpson.
Betsy chose a career as a servant as a Registered Nurse, graduating in 1963 from Parkview Hospital School of Nursing in Wilmington, NC.She then moved to Winter Haven, Florida working as a surgical nurse and returned to North Carolina in 1990 working as a Registered Nurse in the North Carolina Department of Corrections until her retirement.She was a long time member of Gillburg United Methodist Church as a parishioner and in servitude on numerous committees.Her service also extended to working for the people of Kittrell as a member of the Town Council.She especially enjoyed cooking and serving Wednesday night dinners at the church for friends.Her wit will be sorely missed by friends and family.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at Gillburg United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kellie Gallagher.Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by two children, daughter Robbin Watkins Kowalczky and husband Curt and son Daniel L. Watkins and wife Lisa; brother Durwood T. Watkins, Sr. and wife Clarice; grandsons Aaron Watkins, Michael Haskins, Jr. and Zach Kowalczyk; and four great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers John (Jack) W. Watkins, Robert (Man) A. Watkins, Jr.; and her sister, Rose Champion.
The family will receive friends on Friday from noon until 6 pm at her home at 1535 N. Chavis Road, Kittrell and prior to the service on Saturday from 1 until 2 pm at Gillburg United Methodist Church.
Serving as active pall bearers will be James Eatmon, Nick Cornish, Sr., Nick Cornish, Jr., Daniel Aaron Watkins, Michael A. Haskins, Bert Vanderpool, and Joe Ledford.
