Betty Marie Pendergrass Tart, age 85, a former resident of Vicksboro Road, died Friday, August 12, 2016, in a local nursing home.Born in Warren County on April 14, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Lee Pendergrass and Minnie Coley Pendergrass. First and foremost, Betty served Jesus Christ her Savior. Betty was a long time member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.Before her declining health, she was actively involved in many of the church activities, she sang in the Choir, served as a teacher in the Under His Wings Sunday School Class, and as the church secretary for many years. In 2005, Betty received the prestigious Karl Bunckly Teacher of the Year Award, a recognition by the entire Pentecostal Holiness Conference. To many, Ms Betty was the Matriarch of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. She genuinely adored her church.
Betty was a wonderful cook and loved to share a good meal with family and friends. Betty loved with her whole heart, and was loved by SO many.
Funeral services will be held Monday night at 7 pm at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, officiated by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 am at Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by four sisters, Mary P. Brame and Joyce P. Stone (Carl) of Henderson, Peggy P. Drewer (John) of Eastern Shore, VA, and Nancy P. Bartolo (Bart) of Swea City, Iowa; two brothers, John Pendergrass (Fannie) of Henderson, and Bennie Pendergrass (Debby) of Creedmoor; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, including special niece, Angie Whitley, of College Grove, TN, who thought of her Aunt Betty as a second mother, and many beloved friends, and the very special Dominique.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse Thomas JT Pendergrass and Charles Joe Pendergrass; and niece and nephews: Miranda, Eric, Ricky, and Tommy.
The family will receive friends Monday night, prior to the service from 5:30 until 7 pm in the Chapel of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, 904 Americal Road, Henderson, NC27537
