DURHAM- Carl Reuben Shafer, 81, of Croasdaile Retirement Community, died unexpectedly Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at his home.Born in Lee County, IL on February 23, 1938, he was the son of the late Ralph Osborn Shafer and Velma Mae Hess Shafer.He graduated from Bradley University and Washington University in Saint Louis and received a PhD in physics from the University of Colorado.Carl was among the original faculty of Vance Granville Community College, where he was an instructor for over 32 years.He was also a member of First United Methodist Church Henderson, Kerr Lake Extension Master Gardeners, and former member of both the Epsom Lion's Club and Henderson Jaycees.He loved gardening and collecting plants, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Duke basketball, a succession of feline friends, word and number puzzles, and he was particularly proud of his daughter and son-in-law.
Carl is survived by his wife, Janet Pineger Shafer of the home; his daughter, Carolyn Shafer Murphy and husband, Michael of Podgorica, Montenegro; his sister, Darlene Shafer of Polo, IL; sister-in-law Jean LeMar of Denver, CO; nieces and nephews in Colorado and Washington.
Memorial services and inurnment will be held Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church Henderson.The family will receive friends following the service.
