HENDERSON--- Carrie Carter Evans, 93, died peacefully on Friday, August 3rd, 2018. Her children, their spouses, and one granddaughter, Lewis Betts Foreman, were by her side. Carrie was preceded in death by her parents Charles Lawrence Carter and Aileen Crichton Lewis Carter, and her husband Dr. Joseph Stradley Evans, Jr. She is survived by son Joseph Samuel Evans, daughter Lysle Evans Betts Plymale, and five grandchildren. Carrie was a deeply devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was an only child, but considered her cherished best friend Pauline McNeny Johnson her sister. She loved her church, First Presbyterian Church of Henderson, which her grandfather helped found and where her grandmother played the organ. Carrie served the church in many ways, but particularly enjoyed heading the interior decoration committee for years. Carrie was born in Henderson, NC on August 15th, 1924. Prior to marriage she attended Peace College, earned an art degree from Richmond Professional Institute, and a business degree from Henderson Business College. She lived in Atlanta while her husband was in dental school, and worked as a designer at Richs department store downtown. Returning to Henderson to make her home with Joe, she delighted in being an interior decorator, fine artist, and portrait painter through the years. She taught art at Vance Granville Community College. She owned an antique shop before becoming a mother. She opened another shop, Carriage House Antiques, after her children were grown. After she closed that shop, she and Joe continued the business by having great adventures doing antique shows up and down the east coast. After Joes death, she continued doing estate sales well into her 80s. She lived twenty years past her beloved husband, on her own and in her own home, and had a season of vibrant living where she brought joy, laughter, and inspiration to many. She will be most dearly missed. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection and a celebration of the life of Carrie Evans will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday August 11 at First Presbyterian Church, Henderson, NC, 222 Young Street, with visitation following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the church, or to Childrens Home Society of NC, Greensboro, NC.
