Charles R. Woodall, Jr.

February 12, 1941 — February 26, 2026

Henderson

HENDERSON- Charles Raymond Woodall, Jr., 85, of Anne Street, died Thursday, February 26, 2026 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Charles was born in Smithfield on February 12, 1941, to the late Raymond and Vara Woodall.

He was preceded in death by his bride of 61 years, Ann Batten Woodall; his “baby” brother, Tommy Woodall; and his granddaughter, Maggie Adaline Woodall.

Charles is survived by his son, Joseph Elbert "Bert" Woodall, and wife Lesley of Durham; his daughter, Sarah W. Pate, and husband Ricky of Smithfield; three grandchildren, Caleb Joseph, Ella Elizabeth, and Madalyn Jade; his sister-in-law, Betty Jane "BJ" Woodall of Selma; and two nephews, John Woodall of Smithfield and Paul Woodall of Selma.

Charles attended UNC and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in 1963. He and Ann were married in June of 1964. After living in Smithfield, Wilson, and Louisburg, they made their home in Henderson, NC, in the early 1970s.

Charles retired from Swift Independent Packing Company in 1996. He was active in the Henderson Jaycees, Scouting, and First Baptist Church in Henderson. With a Spanish minor in college, he enjoyed teaching English as a second language to Hispanic inmates at the local prison. As a traveling salesman, he picked up several languages, including Cantonese and Mandarin, and was always happy to show off the words he had learned along the way.

Charles served as Scoutmaster for Troop 630 in Henderson for nearly 20 years. His greatest joy was watching young scouts figure things out for themselves on camping trips — he understood that a burned pan of eggs is a great teaching moment when you are hungry in the woods. Under his leadership, Troop 630 produced countless Eagle Scouts and created lasting memories for many young men who grew up living by the Scout Oath and Law.

In retirement, Charles and Ann made the most of every season together. They were often found at their vacation home on the Pamlico River, and Charles made sure Ann saw the world — from distant countries to the beautiful landscapes of Hawaii and Alaska. He was always planning the next trip, always ready for another adventure.
