LAKE GASTON- Corbette Lee Capps, 72, of Lake Gaston, NC, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Duke Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by family.He was born January 24, 1946 in Johnston County, NC to the late Delmar and Ada Capps.He was one of six children.Corbette was a veteran of our United States Army.He received his National Defense Service Medal; Sharp Shooter Medal and was Executive Cook. He was a member of the American Legion. He was very proud to have served his country.He retired from the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, NC after 31 years serving as its Building Engineer.The Center honored him by dedicating a Fellows Study in his name. Additionally, he is referenced several times in The Big Book of North Carolina Barbeque "Holy Smoke" by author, John Sheldon Reed as a prominent figure in NC Barbeque. Throughout his professional career, he additionally served as President of the NC Chapter of the American Quarter Horse Association; Member of American Legion; Member of Lake Gaston’s Striper Club. Corbette was also well known for his being revered as the "Pig Master".His Pig Pickin’s were sought after across the country as the Best in Carolina Barbeque. In his later years, Corbette enjoyed his retirement living at Lake Gaston.He took pleasure in fishing, boating, traveling with his wife and other close friends.He especially loved time with family.He was dedicated to his community and neighbors there and was the "go to person" if anyone needed anything. He was well loved and will be truly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held Monday March 5th at 11am at J.M. White Funeral Home in Henderson N.C.The family will receive friends immediately following the service at J. M. White Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Howard Capps; his brother, Ronald Capps; his three daughters (by marriage) Connie Powell (Jim); Michelle Jones; Jennifer Fish (Grant); his grandchildrenMatthew Powell, Kristen Powell, Samantha Fish, Phillip Jones and Marlin Hoffman.In addition, he is survived by his multiple nieces and nephews.
