HENDERSON- David William Powell, 77, a lifelong resident of Henderson, died Saturday, October 21 at Duke University Hospital. Born March 11, 1946 in Vance County, he was the son of Elmore McDonald Powell and Elizabeth Ranes Powell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Jean Powell Johnson. A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. by Dr. Ronald S. Cava at First Baptist Church. David loved playing golf and could be found at the golf course any Wednesday or Sunday afternoon. He was a huge Duke basketball fan, a lover of Motown music, and working in his yard. He loved to travel anywhere; especially the North Carolina mountains and beaches. A favorite spot was New York City where he enjoyed current Broadway shows. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church where he served on multiple committees throughout the years. Of all of his jobs, roles, and hobbies, his absolute favorite was that of Daddy to his daughters and Pops to his grandchildren. David is survived by his wife of forty years, Hollie Boger Powell; his children, Katherine Powell Simpson (Eric) and Elizabeth Powell Ennis (Joshua), and his grandchildren, William Weathers Simpson, Caroline Carlisle Simpson, Charlotte Elizabeth Ennis and James Hollie Ennis. His children and his grandchildren were his heart. The family will receive friends following the service on Tuesday in the fellowship hall and at other times at the home.
