Dr. Gary Kaplowitz

d. October 19, 2015

Dr. Gary Kaplowitz passed away Monday evening, October 19, from pancreatic cancer. He was 63.
He is survived by his wife, Maria; his daughter, Natalie Hutchinson and husband, Walter; his son, Harry Kaplowitz and wife, Lindsey; granddaughters Hannah and Mikayla; mother, Corinne; and brother, David.
He was preceded in death by his father, Philip, in 2009.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on October 29, 1951, to a homemaker and a textiles worker, Gary was the oldest of two children growing up in a traditional Jewish household in the Kensington neighborhood. His days were spent in public school and Hebrew school and, later, at Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn. He enjoyed riding his bicycle around the city with his friends and cousins and playing sports, baseball above all. Along with his father and brother, he regularly attended Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants games, often sitting behind the home dugout.
After graduating from the University of Louisville in 1974, Gary attended medical school in Guadalajara, where he met his wife, Maria. They moved to New York in 1977 to marry and start a family. Their eldest, Natalie, was born in 1980 in Queens, New York. After a move to Henderson in 1984, they welcomed Harry.
While raising his family in Henderson, Gary established his orthopedic practice, serving the community for more than 30 years from both in his office on Ruin Creek Road as well as a physician at Maria Parham Medical Center and Granville Medical Center. He served as Chief of Staff of Maria Parham in 1993. He also served as Chief of Surgery and has served as President of the Vance County Medical Society since 1998. He also was a member of the North Carolina Medical Society since 1984 and of the North Carolina Orthopedic Association since 1986.
Among his favorite activities were traveling with his family, collecting memorabilia, reading nonfiction, and spending time at his beach house in Oak Island. He will be remembered for his love of sports, foreign cars, politics, and science-fiction TV shows. He was loved for his kindness, selflessness, and his gusto. He loved a good corned beef sandwich and authentic Italian food. Often on vacations, he would stare at the ocean and say, "I want to come back as a whale and swim around the ocean."
We hope you found your tide, Gary. You will be dearly missed.
His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his caretakers and everyone that visited him during his illness. A private funeral will be held Thursday morning at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery. A public visitation will be held at J.M. White Funeral Home on 60 Zeb Robinson Road in Henderson on Thursday from 3-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a cancer research society of your choice.
