HENDERSON – Dwight Reece Harris, 62, of David Avenue, died Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Duke University Medical Center. Born February 28, 1959, in Henderson, he was the son of Geneva Woodlief Harris and Lawrence Reece Harris of Henderson. Dwight was a member of West End Baptist Church. A graduate of Vance Senior High School, Dwight earned his bachelor of arts degree in English at UNC Chapel Hill. With memorable professors such as Gerald Unks and Christopher Armitage in that era in Chapel Hill, he recalled his classes fondly – and maintained a lifetime interest in literature, particularly that of Oscar Wilde. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” was a favorite novel. Literature and intellectual pursuits weren’t his only passions. He loved speaking with his friends and family members, whether in person or with regular calls. Conversation topics might range from the political news of the day, religious issues and topics, news from family members near and far, NFL football, and even astrology and other esoteric or intellectual matters. And of course there was one of his favorite interests: Carolina basketball. He was at UNC during the great Dean Smith era – and had followed various sports since he was young – and he brought a lot of knowledge into each conversation. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery by Rev. Michael Currin. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Douglas Lawrence Harris and wife, Karen, of Warrenton, Va., and Michael David Harris and wife, Meg, of Greensboro; and his sister, Barbara H. Currin, of Vance County. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dave H. Currin. The family will receive friends following the service at Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 619 Dabney Drive, Henderson, NC 27536.
