E. Braxton Poythress, 89, a resident of Antioch Loop Road NE in Pikeville, and a former resident of Henderson, died Sunday, January 15, 2023 at Countryside Village. Born on December 30, 1933 in Vance County, he was the son of the late Philip Bruce Poythress and Magnolia Gupton Poythress, and was married to the late Rachel Royster Poythress. Braxton served in the North Carolina National Guard. He was the City Executive/Senior Vice President for the former Southern National Bank in Henderson, and was a member of West End Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and served as Church Treasurer for 40 years. He served as treasurer of the Downtown Development Corporation, served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, the United Way, and the Henderson Vance County Chamber of Commerce. He served as President and Drive Chairman for the Vance County United Way, and was a past President and Board member for the Henderson Kiwanis Club. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 2:00 PM in the J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ron Poythress. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens. He is survived by one daughter, Cathy P. Musgrave (John) of Pikeville; one son, the Rev. Ron Poythress (fiancée Linda) of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Jason Musgrave (Christy), Taylor Musgrave (Brittany), Rebecca Walker, Robert Walker (Summer), Rachel Poythress and their mother Mary Ann Boothe; five great grandchildren, Braxton Musgrave, Sawyer Musgrave, Donovan Walker, Jovie Walker, and Cruz Walker; one brother Tony Poythress (Jean) of Myrtle Beach, SC. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ferebee P. Stainback; and one brother, C. W. Poythress. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at J. M. White Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Musgrave, Taylor Musgrave, Braxton Musgrave, Sawyer Musgrave, Bruce Stainback and Steve Poythress.
