HENDERSON-Mrs. Elizabeth Corbitt Toepleman Borden, 92, passed away at her home on October 15, 2013 after a period of declining health.
Born in Henderson, NC, August 9, 1921, she was the daughter of Frederick Leroy Toepleman and Elizabeth Corbitt Toepleman.She was the granddaughter of Richard J. Corbitt, founder and principal owner of The Corbitt Company, and Jennie Shaw Corbitt, who published Miss Jennies Cookbook, and operated The Little Hotel.
She attended local schools in her early years, graduated from Saint Catherines School, Richmond, VA in 1939, Saint Marys Junior College, Raleigh, NC, in 1941, and Hollins University, Roanoke, VA, in 1943.
She was a former member and President of Maria Parham Hospital Guild, former member of North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation Board, a former and long time Docent at North Carolina Museum of Art, a former Board member of Vance County Arts Council, former Board member Friends of the Library, and a member of Henderson Garden Club, ALMA Club, Tuesday Club and The National Society of Colonial Dames of America.
She was a long time member of The Church of The Holy Innocents, where she served as a member of the Vestry, President of Episcopal Churchwomen, and Chairman of the Alter Guild.
She enjoyed sailing, golf, skiing, gardening and participated in all these activities for many years.
Mrs. Borden is survived by her husband of 68 years, Albert G. Borden, her daughters Emily Borden Ragsdale of Jamestown and Wilmington, NC, Mary Borden Currin and husband Benjamin McNinch Currin, of Raleigh, NC, and a son John Crain Borden and wife Monica Patchell Borden of Raleigh, NC,four grandchildren, Thomas Albert Ragsdale, Katharine Coffin Ragsdale, Elizabeth Currin Houston and her husband Michael, and Ellen Corbitt Currin, and her devoted caregivers Susie Fields, Ruby Venable, Elizabeth Whitley, Cherita Hargrove, Charlotte Harris, Angie Ellington, and Pam Evans.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 3:00 pm at The Church of The Holy Innocents by the Reverend Donald A. Lowery with reception following in the Parish Hall. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1930 Parker Lane.
