Elmer Clay Watson, Jr.

HENDERSON- Elmer Clay Watson, Jr. 69, of Woodtrail Way, died Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at his home. Born July 27, 1953, he was the son of Ruth Lee Watson of Henderson and the late Elmer Clay Watson, Sr. He was the warranty manager at Hendrick Southpoint Auto Mall in Durham. Clay was a founding member of Central Baptist Church where he remained a member for over 36 years. He served as a former Central Baptist Church trustee, was a leader of the Awana Children’s Program for 25 years and co-founded the Garment of Grace Ministry with his wife. He also was a Henderson Rec and church league basketball coach for several years and enjoyed playing recreational basketball at the YMCA through his sixties. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens Cemetery. In addition to his mother, Clay is survived by his wife of 42 years, Karen Mitchell Watson of the home; a daughter, Sonia L. Allen (Liko) of Wake Forest; a son, Brandon Clay Watson (Abby) of Raleigh; two granddaughters, Mililani Allen and Cecilia Watson; a grandson, Jude Allen; and three sisters, Sharon Martin (Chuck) of Fairfax, VA, Brenda Satterwhite (Mike) of Henderson, and Lisa Manning (Greg) of Newland. The family will receive friends following the service at Sunset Gardens and at other times at the home, 308 Woodtrail Way, Henderson, NC 27537. Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Chappell, Will Davis, Claye Frank, Sammy Evans, Bob Holtzclaw, Tommy Tunstall, Phill Hunt, Tommy Marrow, William Duncan and Stan Floyd.
