Frances Burton Horner Powers, a resident of 101 Country Club Drive, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at Duke University Medical Center.A native of Henderson and lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Frances was the daughter of the late Kalford L. Burton and Ruth Abbot Burton.
Frances attended Henderson High School, graduated from Hollins Preparatory School, attended Converse College, and graduated from Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD.While at Peabody she was chosen to audition for a role in the movie, Gone With the Wind. She was a member of the first Girl Scout troop in Henderson.Frances was active in politics and as a lifelong Democrat she became close friends with Lady Bird Johnson and maintained ties with her cousin former President Jimmy Carter.Frances truly never met a stranger and anyone fortunate enough to come in contact with her could not help but be caught up in her enthusiasm and positive outlook on life.She had many humorous sayings, but would often recite one of her favorites, What I got dont need no pearls.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 2, 2012, at 11:00 am in Elmwood Cemetery byDr. Marion D. Lark, assisted by Rev. Doug Addington.
Frances is survived by her husband of thirteen years Preston Powers of the home, stepson Preston Powers, Jr. of Henderson, nephew Burton Sydnor and wife Lynelle of Holden Beach, great nephews Richard and Will Sydnor, four great great nephews, and a host of cousins.In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband and former Mayor of Henderson, Louis D. Horner, her daughter Julia A. Horner and her sister Ruth B. Sydnor.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor at First Baptist Church.At other times they will be at the home.
The family extends special thanks to her wonderful caregivers Hattie Harris, Lucy Smith, Agnes Gibbs, Earljean Lloyd and others.
