George Anthony "Tony" Norwood

HENDERSON- George Anthony “Tony” Norwood, 72, of Poplar Creek Road, died Monday, October 14, 2024 at Duke University Hospital. Born October 9, 1952 in Vance County, he was the eldest son of the late Jane Elizabeth O’Brien Norwood and George Herbert Norwood. Tony retired from the North Carolina Department of Administration as Controller on May 1, 2020, after seventeen years with a recognition plaque from Governor Roy Coooper. He attended Island Creek Baptist Church where funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at10:00 A.M. by Rev. Johnny Yount. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Tony is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Overton Norwood; two daughters, Nora Lynne Norwood Hardenberger and husband, Shane and Stephanie Bartlett Norwood Stokes, and husband, Jason; a grandson Brody Cole Stokes; a granddaughter, Emery Kate Stokes; a step grandson, Kollan Michael Hardenberger; a sister, Katherine Lynne Williams and husband, Kenny; a brother, Danny Joe Norwood and wife, Angie; and a grand-dog, Murphy. The family will receive friends following the service on Saturday in the fellowship hall of Island Creek Baptist Church and at other times at the home. Serving as pallbearers will be Lee Chandler, Jeremy Aiken, Jeff Jones, Craig O'Brien, Lee Overton and Kenny Williams. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, NC 27537.
