George N. "Preacher" Tucker, Jr., 88, a resident of 1980 Dabney Road in Henderson, NC died suddenly on Friday, April 22, 2016. Born in Vance County on January 4, 1928 to the late Mabel Ester Davis Tucker and George N. "Ditcher" Tucker, Sr., he lived on Raleigh Road in the Mobile Community from the time he was five years old until his marriage to the late Sarah Brooks Wilkinson Tucker, who preceded him in death in 2004.
A graduate of Henderson High School, George and his father founded G. N. Tucker & Son in the mid 40s. They worked in the house to house business until 1976. In 1978, he mentored his daughter in another family business, Betty Bs, which they happily worked side by side until selling the business in 2011. George and W.O. Mitchell established and operated The BBQ Hut in the 70s and 80s. In later years, he volunteered in the Maria Parham Hospital Gift Shop.
Some of his happiest days and fondest friendships were formed as a member of the North Carolina National Guard. He was commissioned as First Lieutenant on the 30th I.N.F. Div., First Battalion 139 Infantry Division Company C Platoon Leader.
George was constantly busy and always had a project in the works. He will be remembered for his happy disposition, love and respect of his fellow man, offering a helping hand, and commitment that one is never too old to learn.
A member of The First Baptist Church in Henderson, a memorial service and celebration of his life will take place in the Sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2016.Dr. Ronald S Cava, Rev. Harry Lee Williams, and Rev. William C. Brodie will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at others times at the home.
Surviving are his daughter, Betty Brooks Tucker Boyd and husband, Glenn, his son, George N. Tucker III and wife, Gail, and his treasured granddaughter, Cassidy M. Tucker, and his beloved friend, Louise Lipscomb Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters, Kenton T. Norton Parrott and Margaret T. Reams Strickland.
