George Reginald Tucker, Jr.

May 3, 0193 — Sep 29, 2026

George Reginald Tucker, Jr., MD, 96, previously of Chapel Hill, passed away on September 29, 2026, in Winston-Salem, at Homestead Hills. Known to family and friends as “Reg,” he lived a life distinguished by service, integrity, and compassion.

Reg was born in Hertford, to the late George Reginald Tucker, Sr. and Maude Monds Tucker. After attending the public schools of Perquimans County, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and went on to graduate from the UNC School of Medicine with the Class of 1955.

Following postgraduate training and service in the United States Navy, and residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Reg entered private practice in Family Medicine. With his partner, M. W. Wester, MD, he founded Henderson Family Medicine Clinic. Under their leadership, the practice grew to include multiple physicians, among them Reg’s brother, the late W. Beverly Tucker, Sr., MD.

Reg devoted 35 years to the practice of medicine in Henderson, where his professional accomplishments were many. He served as Chief of Staff and on the Board of Trustees of Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Clinical Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Family Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine and an Assistant Consulting Professor of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and served as State Director of the American Academy of Family Practice. Reg lent his expertise to numerous professional boards and frequently served as president and chairman of leading medical associations. More important than the official accolades was the lasting impact he had on his patients, to whom he was completely dedicated.

Reg was deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians. He mentored UNC medical students at his Henderson practice, served on the Medical School’s Visiting Committee, and was President of the UNC School of Medicine Alumni Association. In recognition of his contributions to the School and to his community, he received the UNC Medical Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 2004.

Service was not simply a part of Reg’s professional life; it was a defining personal trait. He was always deeply involved in whatever church he called home. At First Baptist Church Henderson, he served as a deacon, choir member, and Chair of the Deacon Board. In retirement, he was instrumental in establishing Emerald Isle Baptist Church and served as its Deacon Chair. After settling in Chapel Hill, he joined the choir at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He also volunteered with the Hem of His Garment in Swansboro and continued serving others through part-time medical practice at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune.

A great listener, Reg possessed a gentle nature, combined with exceptional wisdom, empathy, a keen mind, and a quick wit. His counsel was frequently sought, and he was widely known for his consistent concern and genuine interest in the health and well-being of others. His character, knowledge, and dedication earned him the broad and deep respect of patients, colleagues, friends, church members, and community members. People were naturally drawn to his warmth and kindness, and he seemed to touch the hearts and positively impact the lives of everyone fortunate enough to call him friend, family, or doctor. Reg demonstrated remarkable resilience as he faced increasing challenges and advancing disabilities. Still, during the final week of his life, he remained interested in how others were doing and ready to offer his thoughtful care and attention.

Reg had many passions outside of medicine and service. An ardent Tar Heel, he rarely missed a UNC football or basketball game. His love of boating began in his early Henderson years on Kerr Lake and continued throughout his life on the Intracoastal Waterway. He loved water skiing and continued windsurfing at the coast well into his 80s. His lifelong love of tennis followed him all over courts from Henderson to Atlantic Beach and Chapel Hill.

Above all else, however, Reg’s greatest love was his family. He was deeply devoted to them and cherished the life they shared. His beloved wife, Maude Holmes Tucker, was also his high school sweetheart, and they shared 66 years of marriage before her death.

Reg is survived by his son, George R. Tucker, III, and his wife, Kirvin Satterwhite, of Palm Springs, CA; his daughter, Lib T. Edwards; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Edwards Chrisp; and his great-grandchildren, Bella Hope Edwards, Kristina Diane Chrisp, and Elijah Lee Chrisp, all of Winston-Salem, NC. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Tucker of Hickory.

A private service of inurnment will be followed by a memorial service celebrating Reg’s life at First Baptist Church in Henderson on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 2 PM. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Henderson Country Club.
