HENDERSON-Gertrude O'Brien Harris, 95, a resident of 1391 Hicksboro Road, died Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Concordia Nursing and Rehabilitation.Born on December 15, 1923 in Granville County, she was the daughter of the late Lucious Green O'Brien and Jessie Satterwhite O'Brien, and was the widow Robert Harold Harris, Sr.
Gertrude was a former employee in the Accounting Department at Roses Stores, Inc. for 26 years and at J. C. Penney Co. for 26 years. She was a member of Dexter Baptist Church, the James B. White # 199 Chapter of Eastern Star, the Vance Violets, and the Golden Age Club.She was a former volunteer for Maria Parham Hospital, the American Red Cross for 12 years, and the Henderson YMCA for ten years.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 2 pm at Harris Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery by Pastor Glenn Stallsmith.
She is survived by two daughters, Peggy H. Moss (Jerry) and Barbara H. Short (Carlton) all of Henderson; four grandchildren, R. Brian Short, Carla S. Duffy, Amy O. Moss, and Stephen T. Moss; six great grandchildren; and her caregivers, Carolyn Venable, Lucy Mitchell, Ella Hilliard, and Maxine Watkins.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert H. Harris, Jr.; three sisters, Dorothy O. Stone, Isobell O. Green, and Opaleigh O. Fuller; and one brother, James H. O'Brien.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church cemetery, and at other times at the home of her daughters, Peggy Moss, 1645 Hicksboro Road, and Barbara Short, 730 Allison-Cooper Road.
