HENDERSON-Grace Ward Vickery, age 82, of Henderson took her last breath in this world on August 6, 2010. Grace, as she was known to her friends and family, was born on October 5, 1927 in Chatham County to the late John Randolph Ward and Sallie York Ward.
She graduated Valedictorian from the Staley School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Elon College where she met her husband, I. H. Vick Vickery, Jr., a former Governor of the Carolinas District of Kiwanis International.The two shared a very loving marriage for 55 years until his death in 2002.
Grace spent the majority of her adult life trying to make her adopted hometown of Henderson a better place to live.She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, and taught for over 30 years in the Vance County School system.As a Trustee for Vance-Granville Community College since 1996, she helped to oversee tremendous growth and outreach by the college.She was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Henderson, serving as Club President in 2008-2009 and was honored with a George F. Hixson Fellow.She was very active in the Democratic Party having served as Chair of the Vance County Democratic Party and as a member of the State Executive Committee of the North Carolina Democratic Party. She served as a delegate to the 2004 and 2008 national conventions and as an alternate delegate to the 1988, 1992, and 2000 conventions. In addition, she served proudly as the Vance County Key for many of the campaigns for former Governor Jim Hunt.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 10:30 am at Sunset Gardens.A celebration of Graces life will be held Monday at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church by Rev. George Speake.
Grace is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Ward Stephenson Dale and husband, Tommy, of Henderson; one brother, Clifton G. Ward of Asheboro; two very special nephews and their families, including James B. Stephenson and wife, Theresa and children, Chason and Dale of Cary and R. Michael Stephenson and wife, Cheryl and children, Milena and Natasha of Greenville and Henderson; nephew, John Ward and wife, Margo of Greenville; nieces, Dr. Doris Jeanette of Philadelphia, Pa, and Edith Boy of Sanford; great nephews, Julian, Uriah, and Isaac Ward of Greenville; and sister-in-law, Mary Ward of Staley.She was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Ward and sister-in-law, Mary Lee Ward.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7:00 until 8:30 pm at J. M. White Funeral Home, and immediately following the service in the Ladies Parlor of the First United Methodist Church.
Serving as pall bearers will be Randy Parker, Gary Frazier, Opie Frazier, Donald Seifert, James Edwards, Jim Johnson, and Bob Jones.
