Grover Eppy Grissom, Jr., 80 a resident of Hendersonville, died February 24, 2011 at Hendersonville Health & Rehabilitation Center.Born in Rocky Mount, NC on August 20, 1930, he was the son of the late Mary Nell Smithwick Grissom and Grover Eppy Grissom, Sr.
Grover moved to Henderson when he was one year old, and after graduating from Henderson High School, he served for one year in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in San Diego, CA.Upon returning to civilian life, he went to work with his father at Grissoms Shoe Shop.After his father retired, Grover purchased the business and operated it successfully until 1997.
Grover met his wife of 42 years, Margie in 1959, and they were married on June 30, 1968.After living in Henderson for 32 years, they moved to Hendersonville in 1997 and enjoyed an active lifestyle in the mountains of western North Carolina.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Henderson, NC and the American Legion in Henderson, NC.He enjoyed traveling, and he loved spending time hiking and driving the Blue Ridge Parkway.Grover was an accomplished amateur photographer, and he won several first place ribbons in numerous competitions.In addition, he was an avid gardener and was featured in the Garden section of the Hendersonville Times-News newspaper in 2008 along with pictures of him and his garden.Most of all, he was especially inspired by country, bluegrass and gospel music, and he enjoyed attending musical events in the Appalachian mountains.
After being diagnosed with Parkinsons in 1997, Grover fought a courageous battle with the disease for 13 years.Margie and Grover were active members of the Parkinsons Support Group of Asheville where Margie served as President from 2006 to 2008.
He is survived by his wife Margie Catlett Grissom of Hendersonville; a sister, Hilda Grissom Pernell of Summerville, SC; nephew, Dan and wife Mary Pernell of Summerville, SC; niece, Jean Curles and husband, Ray of Chesapeake, VA.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m. in the J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Frank Sossoman officiating.Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of Mike and Jane Pernell at 1233 Franklin Lane in the Timberlake subdivision off Satterwhite Point Road.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Butch Clopton, E. G. Collins, Wade Grissom, Jason Pernell, David Powell and Matt Thomas.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Parkinsons Support Group of Asheville, c/o Evelyn Posey, 21 Riverknoll Dr, Asheville, NC28805 or to Four Seasons Compassion for Life (Hospice), 571 S. Allen Rd, Flat Rock, NC28731.
