KITTRELL-Herbert Millard "Big Man" Grissom, Sr., age 80, a resident of 140 E. Main Street, died Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.Born on October 20, 1932 in Vance County, he was the son of the late Vernon Wyche Grissom, Sr. and Lallie Pulley Grissom.
Millard played baseball for the Durham Bulls and the former Milwaukee Braves during the early to mid 1950s.He was a retired tobacco farmer, a charter member of the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department , served as a Kittrell Town Commissioner for a number of years, and a member of Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 3 pm at Fuller Chapel United Church Of Christ by the Rev. Tammy Ayscue.Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Jensen Grissom of the home; one daughter, Becky G. Duke (Danny) of Kittrell; three sons, Herbie Grissom (Paula), of Kittrell , Al Grissom (Faye) of Henderson, and Tony Grissom of Simpsonville, SC; one sister, Eunice G. Perkinson of Wake Forest; ten grandchildren, Bob Moss (Anita), Rod Moss, Everett Grissom (LeeAnn), Scott Grissom (Joy), Trent Grissom (Sherry), Adriene Myers (Shannon), Andrew, Anthony, Anna Kathryn, and Alex Grissom; and eight great grandchildren, Jessica, Olivia, and Reese Moss, Hailey Grissom, Whitt and Clara Grissom, and Tyler and Elle Myers.He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Grissom and V.W. "Sonny" Grissom, Jr.; a sister, Phyllis G. Dement; and a great grandchild, Tyler Moss.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Saturday in the Fellowship Hall of Fuller Chapel United Church Of Christ.At other times they will be at the home at 140 E. Main Street in Kittrell.
Serving as active pall bearers will be his grandsons.
