HENDERSON-Hazel Lolita Pace Peck was born on February 18, 1923 in Kittrell, North Carolina.She passed away at home on November 22, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Bryant Nicholas (Nick) and Cassie Goodson Pace.On March 19, 1949, Hazel married her beloved husband, Thomas Dowse Peck, Jr.They had been married for 44 years when he passed away August 7, 1993.
Hazel attended school in Kittrell, North Carolina and graduated from Zeb Vance High School.After graduating from Henderson Business College in 1942, she worked for ten years as a secretary at Roses Stores, Inc.After her children were born, she devoted her life to being a homemaker and volunteer.She was a member of The Church of The Holy Innocents where she was a member of the Alter Guild and Episcopal Churchwomen for many years.She served on the committee to restore the historic Saint James Episcopal Church in Kittrell, NC.Mrs. Peck was a life member of the Girl Scouts and served as a Leader, Assistant Leader, Day Camp Director, Troop Consultant, and Cookie Chair for the County.She was a life member of the Garden Clubs of North Carolina and member of Henderson Council of Garden Clubs, serving as President from 1973 to 1975.Mrs. Peck was a member of Colonial Garden Club since 1965 serving as President from 1969 to 1970 and Beautification Chairman.She was counselor for Dig N Dream Junior Garden Club for 18 years.Mrs. Peck was a member of the Vance County Beautification Committee serving as Vice-Coordinator for two years and Coordinator for six years.She also served on the Bicentennial Commission as Chairman of the Tree Planting Project.Mrs. Peck was a Charter Member of the Vance County Historical Society serving as Secretary, Chairman of the Museum Committee, member of the Board of Directors, and Heritage of Vance County committee member.Mrs. Peck was a Charter Member of the Vance County Humane Society serving as Treasurer from 1979 to 1993.She was also a member of the Advisory Committee for Vance County Animal Control.Mrs. Peck volunteered for the City of Henderson as Secretary of the Downtown Working Review Committee of the Henderson Redevelopment Commission in 1973, member of the Henderson Community Relations Council Citizens Advisory Committee appointed by the Henderson City Council in 1974, member of the Henderson Zoning Board of Adjustments for 17 years, and member of the Henderson Community Appearance Commission for 25 years.She was a member of the Maria Parham Hospital Guild, serving as President for five years.Mrs. Peck served two terms as a Board Member for the Salvation Army.She was a member of the Vance County Agriculture Extension Service Advisory Board from 1975 to 1976, an individual member of the Henderson Vance County Chamber of Commerce, member of The National Arbor Day Foundation, member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and member of Preservation North Carolina.Mrs. Peck was recognized by for her many volunteer activities by the Henderson Vance County Chamber of Commerce as Woman of the Year in 1974.The Vance County Historical Society recognized her for the Development of The Vance County Historical Museum on February 24, 1998.Mrs. Peck received the State of North Carolina Certificate of Appreciation as a Special Volunteer from Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. on April 19, 1983 and the State of North Carolina Department of Human Resources for Volunteer Services from Governor James G. Martin in 1986.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 am at The Church of The Holy Innocents by Father Donald Lowrey.
