KTRELL-Hector Hilliard Moss, age 88, a resident of 317 Moss Stock Farm Road, diedMonday, June 28, 2010, at Rex Health Care in Raleigh.Born on February 11, 1922 in Vance County, he was the son of the late Robert Thomas Moss, Sr. and Penola Clopton Moss.Mr. Moss was a Veteran of the United States Army serving as a combat engineer during World War II. He helped build the first saw mill in India and helped construct a number of simple bridges made of sliced tree logs fastened together to withstand the weight of heavy trucks.
He also helped construct and maintain the Ledo Road supply line in Burma.Formally burying the dead was one of the first things Mr. Moss and the 236th Engineer Combat Battalion did in Myitkyina, Burma after the fighting stopped in 1945 when the Japanese surrendered.
In 2009, Mr. Moss was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his service during World War II.The formal presentation was made in his absence during the annual reunion of the 236th Combat Engineers which was held on July 12, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee.He retired from Westinghouse in 1982 after 26 years of service.
Mr. Moss was a former member of Oakridge Baptist Church in Kittrell and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh for more than 40 years.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:00 am in the J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Josephine Pulley Moss of the home; his children, Gloria M. Roberts of Kittrell, Grady Moss of Raleigh, and Kirby Moss of Norman, Oklahoma; three sisters, Rachel M. Garrett of Kittrell, Eunice M. Alford of Neuse, Jo Ann M. Loy of Gibsonville; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rufus Moss and R. T. Moss, Jr.; and four sisters, Eva Moss, Grace Overton, Lennis Hardison, and Bessie Woodlief.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at J. M. White Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home at 317 Moss Stock Farm Road in Kittrell.
Arrangements are by J. M. White Funeral Home.
