HENDERSON- Howard Gill Thomas, 94, died Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at his home.Born in Granville County on February 6, 1924, he was the son of the late Moss Tom Thomas and Judith McGhee Thomas.Howard was a highly decorated United States Army Veteran having served in the 84th Division, 334th Infantry Division, Company C during World War II.His honors include being awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Expert Marksmanship Badge and Good Conduct Medal.He saw active duty in three out of the five major battles during the Battle For Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge.For his efforts in these battles he was awarded the European Theatre Medal with three Bronze Stars.In addition to these awards and medals for his service, he was given a Certificate of Merit in recognition of his conspicuously meritorious and outstanding performance of military duty against the enemy in Germany.It was noted at that time, During the period 23 February to 5 March, Private First Class Thomas, with disregard for his safety under enemy fire, performed his duties as a messenger in a manner which contributed materially to the success of his units operations.Howard was retired from the former Franklinton Cotton Mill where he worked as a dolpher and was also retired from farming.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held Friday at 4:00PM at Sunset Gardens by Rev. Henry Abbott and Rev. Milton Abbott.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Edna Davis Thomas of the home; two daughters, Rose T. Boyd and husband Wilbur, and Hilda T. Pernell all of Kittrell; four grandsons, Todd Hock and wife Karen, David Hock, Peyton Boyd, and Isreal Savage and wife Veronica; five great-grandchildren, Chris Hock and wife Lauren, Amanda Barker, Toren Savage, Teagan Boyd and Gitana Savage; two great-great-grandchildren, Carson Barker and Sylar Barker; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by five brothers, Aaron Thomas, Coy Thomas, William Thomas, Charlie Thomas, and George Thomas; two sisters, Abney Currin, and Virgie Davis; two half sisters, Florence McGhee, and Gertie Mason; and two half brothers, Ossie Thomas, and Frisco Thomas.
The family will receive friends following the service on Friday at Sunset Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a church or charity of ones choice.
