Irma VanDyke Ellington, 74, a resident of 1415 St. Andrews Church Road, died Sunday, November 19, 2017, at her home.Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on February 2, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Zack Lee VanDyke and Pansy Jones Tat VanDyke.Irma was a retired Detective with the Henderson Police Department, of which she was the first female Detective.She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. David Pate and the Rev. Frank Sossamon.Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Oxford.
She was the wife of Chester Carl Ellington, Jr., and is survived by one son, Allen Hester
(Elizabeth) of Boerne, Texas; one step-son, Stephen Ellington (Rachel) of Henderson; two sisters, Shirley V. Jones of Henderson and Nancy V. Parker of Enfield, Connecticut; one daughter-in-law, Lori Hester of Oxford; four grandsons, Kelly Hester, Andrew Hester, Luke Hester, and Daniel Hester; two great grandsons, Nathan Hester and Gavin Hester; six step grandchildren; and one step great granddaughter.She was preceded in death by one son, David Hester; and one sister, Maxine VanDykeRenn.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 until 2 pm at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. At other times they will be at t he home at 1415 St. Andrews Church Road and at the home of Shirlety Jones, 1061 Hwy. 158-By-Pass.
Serving as active pallbearers will be members of the Henderson Police Honor Guard.Serving as honorary pall bearers will be all law enforcement.
