HENDERSON - Isabel Tally Hart Raynor, 98, a resident of Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehab Center, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Maria Parham Medical Center under the care of Community Hospice. Isabel was born in Dabney, NC on March 5, 1918, the daughter of the late Ferol Fleming Hart and Ira Dorsey Hart. Isabel graduated from Dabney High School in 1934 and was valedictorian of her class at age 16. During her high-school years, she was the captain of her basketball team, the All-Stars, and scored 27 points during one memorable game. After high school Isabel attended Henderson Business College and was a member of the Business and Professional Womens Club where she met First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt during her 1940 visit to Henderson. Her first job was with Rose Gin & Supply Co., and later was employed by Harriet & Henderson Yarns in the cost accounting department. While roller skating on Dabney Dr. at age 12, Isabel met her future husband, Emmette L. Raynor, when he chased after her on skates. Thirteen years later, on May 23, 1943, Isabel and Emmette were married in St. Petersburg, Fla. where he was on furlough while serving in the U.S. Army. In 1949 they moved to Henderson where they were active, lifelong members of the First Baptist Church of Henderson. Over the years, Isabel was active in Training Union, choir, Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs. An excellent seamstress and crotchetier, she spent many hours crafting tams and afghans for which she was well-known. Isabel especially enjoyed cooking traditional Southern meals for her family, friends and shut-ins. Her chocolate layer cake was unparalleled.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM in the Leathers Memorial Chapel of First Baptist Church by Dr. Ronald S. Cava.Graveside services will be held at 1 PM at Elmwood Cemetery.
Isabel is survived by one daughter, Susan Tally Raynor of Alexandria, VA; two grandchildren, Caitlin Hurwit of Washington, DC and Nicholas Hurwit and wife, Mara of Corvallis, OR;and her daughter-in-law, Sue Ervin Raynor of Richmond, VA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Hart Bobby Raynor and William Richard Billy Raynor.She is also survived by hernieces, Brenda B. Gainey; Milly B. Nelligar; Sophie H. Jackson; Chloe H. Ireland; and Pat H. House.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church.
