John Douglas “Doug” Smith, 87, of Ruin Creek Road, died Saturday, May 16, 2026 at Maria Parham Health. Born March 13, 1939 in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Wilma Tharrington Smith and Atlas Smith. Doug was a retired mechanic with Pete Smith Garage in Louisburg. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Louisburg. He was also a Veteran of the United States Army and served in the North Carolina National Guard.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of J.M. White Funeral Home by Rev. Eddie Nutt. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Garrett Smith of the home and a sister, Faye Burnette of Franklin County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Dorsey and two brothers, James Smith and Atlas C. “Pete” Smith.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Garrett, Randy Garrett, Tony Sanford, Keith Smith, Greg Smith and Stuart Robbins.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Andy Garrett and Bud Wortham.
The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 P.M. at J.M. White Funeral Home; and at other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, 1211 North Garnett Street, Henderson, NC 27536.
