HENDERSON-James Conly Capps, 94, a resident of 2491 Poplar Creek Road, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 19, 2018.Born on December 13, 1923 in Vance County, he was the son of the late James McElree Capps and Clara Wyche Capps.Mr. Capps attended Campbell College and was a member of the Alumni Association.He was a tobacco farmer and retired from the former W. A. Adams Tobacco Company. He was a member of the former School Board of Dabney High School, an active member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church (serving as a Deacon Emeritus and a former Sunday School teacher), and a member of the Flat River Baptist Association.He enjoyed playing golf (particularly the Mellow Yellow challenges), watching baseball and basketball games, and traveling.He took his young family to the World Fairs in New York and Toronto, Canada, and enjoyed many family trips after retirement before his health declined.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at Poplar Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Evans.Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Capps is survived by his wife of 71 years, Peggy Vaughan Capps of the home; two daughters, Faye C. Guin and husband, Danny, and Gayla C. Strickland and husband, Danny of Henderson; four grandchildren, Bryan Strickland, Dean Guin, Lance Strickland and wife, Dolly, and Kevin Guin; five great grandchildren, Ryan Strickland, Danica Thomas, Blake Strickland, Tyler Strickland, and Hunter Strickland; one sister, Louise C. Belmonte of Lake George, NY; and three brothers, John Capps and Jerry Capps of Henderson, and Julian Capps of Phoenix, Arizona.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James Conly Jimmy Capps, Jr.; one sister, Edna C. Sanders; and one brother, Cecil Capps.
The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at Poplar Creek Baptist Church.At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be David Parham, Ray Parham, Ronnie Parrott, John Bunch, Donnie Dunkley, Justin Dunkley, and Randy Ball.
