HENDERSON- James Glenn Boyd of Dabney Road transitioned to eternal rest on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. Born July 21, 1945, in Meridian, Texas to the late Travis W. and Lorene Goodman Boyd, he was a graduate of Roosevelt High School, attended Lubbock Christian College, Texas Tech, and Nash Community College. Drafted into the US Navy during the Vietnam War, he served his country from 1966-1970. During his service, he was exposed to Agent Orange which led to the development of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and an extremely weakened immune system. He was a member of The Urantia Book Virginia-Carolina Readers study group where he served as treasurer. With this group and their study, love, encouragement, respect, and support, he found and developed his spiritual faith and strong friendships. Glenn was an avid reader averaging three books weekly, an organic gardener since the late 1970s, and until this year always enjoyed a year-round garden and shared his bounty with friends and family. In the early 1990s, Glenn was an active member of both GROW (Granville residents opposed to waste) and GNAT (Granville Nonviolent Action Team). Both opposed the siting of a proposed hazardous waste incinerator to be in various Granville County sites. All were successful in defeating the location to Granville County and many years later Granville Athletic Park (GAP) was dedicated for county recreational/athletic use on the proposed Bell Town site. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 48 years, Betty Brooks Tucker Boyd, a beloved daughter, Cassidy Michelle Tucker of Charlotte, his sister Linda Boyd Trammell and husband, Stanley of Texas, sister-in-law Norma Best Boyd of White Level, and a longtime friend, Ken Fuller and wife Becky. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Allen W. Boyd of Texas and Travis D. Boyd of White Level, NC., in laws Brooks and George N. Tucker, Jr, and brother-in-law, George Norman Tucker III and wife, Gail. Called Glenn by his family and friends, he was lovingly referred to as Unky by all of Cassidy’s childhood friends. Before his immune system became so weakened, he was a frequent overnight volunteer with Community Partners of Hope which operates an emergency shelter for men ages 18 and up. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Glenn’s memory to CPOH, PO Box 1791, Henderson, NC 27536 for operational expenses at their new shelter now known as City Road Center of Hope in the former City Road United Methodist Church facility. Honoring his wishes, there will be no service. The family will receive friends at the home, 1950 Dabney Road, on Saturday from 1:00-5:00PM.
