James Willoughbye Hicks Sr., age 82, a resident of 836 Rook Street, died Monday April 15, 2013, at a local nursing home.Born in Warren County on June 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Leonard Moody Hicks Sr. and Mary Ella Rogers Hicks Faulkner.Mr. Hicks played football for John Graham High School joining the team as a freshman going to state undefeated. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, an Assistant Manager with the former A&P Grocery Store, and member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson.He also was a member of Henderson Masonic Lodge #229 AF & AM for over fifty years, member of Henderson York Rite Masonic Bodies, Henderson Shrine Club and a charter member of the Amran Shrine Temple.After his family, friends, and faith his greatest enjoyment was supporting the annual Shriners Fish Fry and keeping in contact with his football team mates.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church by Dr. John M. Check and Rev. Patricia Archer.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Drake May Hicks of the home; a daughter, Rebecca H. Brooks of Kittrell; two sons, James W. Hicks, Jr. of the home and Michael E Hicks and wife Carlene of Maylene, AL; a brother, Clifton Hicks and wife Shelby of Norlina; three grandchildren, Jennifer B. Layton and husband, Mark, James W. Hicks, III and wife Heather, Sharon H. Jones and husband, Michael; and seven great-grandchildren: Kyle and Benjamin Layton, James IV and Makenzie Hicks and Zackary Hargreaves, and Landon and Callie Jones.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie R. Hicks.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM till 8:30 PM at J.M. White Funeral Home.At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as honorary pall bearers will be members of Henderson Masonic Lodge and Henderson Shrine Club.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 114 Church Street, Henderson, NC 27536 or Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Rd., Greenville, SC, 29605.
