KITTRELL-James Rudolph Rowland, Jr. age 75, a resident of 3495 Bobbitt Road, Kittrell passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, October 11, 2015 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with an illness.He was born February 17, 1940 in Vance County to the late James Rudolph Rowland, Sr. and the late Dorothy Renn Rowland.He graduated from Epsom High School in 1958 where he was an active member of Future Farmers of America and where he met his beloved wife of 58 years Martha Woodard Rowland of the home.
He was an avid farmer his entire life; in the early years with his wife and sister and later with his son, Randy.He was well known for producing the best looking cured golden leaf tobacco in the area.Some said that his tobacco could be spotted as soon as you entered the warehouse not only because of the quality, but also the perfect coloring.James always attributed his success in farming to the involvement of his wife, sister, sons, and nephew in the family farm.In addition to his family, many of the young men from the area worked for James in the summertime.They were all near and dear to his heart throughout his life.In 1976, he was named Young Farmer of the Year by North Carolina Farm Bureau.He possessed a special love for his cattle and other farm animals and displayed this by the respectful manner in which he cared for them.James also loved his pets especially his shop cat.
He was a life-long member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church which he loved deeply and supported his entire life.He served in many capacities in the administrative area of the Church.He proudly served in the choir where he sang solos and at one time sang in the quartet.The Christmas Cantata was his favorite event for the choir.One of his other favorite events was the annual Christmas Carol hayride in which he transported carolers on his hay-filled truck to sing Christmas carols to many people in the area.He was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class and the Allen Bible Sunday School class.For many years, James faithfully served as treasurer for the United Methodist Men.When his children became involved with the Boy Scouts of America, he served as Cub Master of the Plank Chapel United Methodist Church Pack 600 Cub Scout group where he was named Cub Master of the year by the Boy Scouts of America.
James had many talents, one of which was art.His love of art led him to paint many oil paintings and drawings of beach scenes, flowers, old barns, and country scenes.Several of his art pieces received awards at Art Society art exhibitions.He was also a talented woodworking artist designing and crafting many fine handmade woodwork pieces.One of his most precious pieces is the hand made and hand painted nativity scene that was displayed at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church for many years.Most of his artwork and woodworking art can be found in all of his familys homes.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2014, at 11:00 am at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. Carol Dean.Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; James Rudolph (Rudy) Rowland, III (Kathy), Charles Randolph (Randy) Rowland (Whitney), and Timothy Ryan Rowland (Angie), all of Kittrell.Three grandchildren; Casey Rowland Mozingo (Rider) of Kinston, James Rudolph Rowland, IV (Amanda) of Columbus, OH, and Charli Marie Rowland of Kittrell, one sister; Patricia Rogers and husband John of Kittrell; a nephew Gregory Steven Hunt of Raleigh; and special friend, Pat Fuller of Kittrell.
James was devoted Christian, husband, father, brother, and friend.He was known for his mild temperament and mannerisms.He loved his family deeply and will be sorely missed by all.His sons, who lovingly cared for him during his illness, not only with his physical needs, but with his emotional and spiritual needs will be blessed for their undying love and supp
