OXFORD-James Joseph Thomas, age 71, a resident of 1740Burnside Road, died Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.Born in Yancey County on March 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Jeter James Thomas and June Gouge Thomas.
James was a retired Supervisor for S. T. Wooten.After retiring, he started Thomas and Sons Concrete, Inc. where he worked with his sons until he retired.He was a member of Tungsten Baptist Church but attended Island Creek Baptist Church.
He was a founding member of the Twelve Point Hunting Club.In his youth, he played semi-pro baseball, and later in life enjoyed watching his grandchildren and other children play baseball. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and fishing.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at Island Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Marshall Neathery and Albert Capps.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Norwood Thomas of the home; three sons, James Michael Thomas of Oxford, Chad Ray Thomas and Brad Jay Thomas and wife Kathy of Henderson; two brothers, Jerry Dean Thomas andJessie Lee Thomas of Oxford; eight grandchildren, Dustin Thomas, Dillon Thomas, Asa Thomas, Erin Thomas, Seth Thomas, Avery Thomas, Eli Thomas, and Raylan Thomas.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Robin Thomas.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 pm at J. M. White Funeral Home.At other times they will be at the home at 1740 Burnside Road.
Serving as honorary pall bearers will be Gene Arthur Vaughan, P. G. Vaughan, Brent Edwards, Dan Patterson, Bobby Norwood, all members of the Twelve Point Hunting Club, and the Townsville High School Class of 1961
