DURHAM- Jane Marie Lloyd, age 91, a resident of The Forest at Duke, died February 10, 2023. Born on June 5, 1931 in Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late Alfonso Lloyd, Attorney at Law and Ruth Elisabeth Royster Lloyd, homemaker and legal secretary to her husband. Jane received her BS degree from the University of Mary Washington in 1953 and her Master of Arts degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. After attending post-graduate classes at the University of Southern California on the Wellesley Campus, and at UNC- Greensboro, her teaching career began in 1953 at Griar School for Girls in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. She then taught at Thompson Junior High in Statesville, NC and St. Mary’s Junior College. In 1961 she was hired at Duke University on a one year appointment and she retired from Duke in 1993, 32 years later, as Associate Professor in Health, Physical Education and Athletics. In her teaching career she taught 14 different activity sports classes, various Health courses and served as a club advisor. Jane was the founder and first coach of the first Duke Women’s Golf Team, Chairman of Golf in the NCAIAW (now the NCAA), and helped start the “Big Four” competition in the 1970’s with Wake Forest University, UNC-CH, Appalachian State and Duke. After retiring from coaching the golf team, she continued to be active in the Duke Sports Club Program which consisted of 32 clubs run by students. Her sabbaticals consisted of visits to Vanderbilt, Princeton, West Chester State, Harvard, Yale and MIT to learn how to advance Duke’s program. Jane was an avid golfer competing every summer in tournaments. She was a member of the NC Golf Association, and the Carolinas Golf Association of which she also was an officer, played match play tournaments on the NC and SC teams and participated in the Trans-National and US Senior Women’s at Pine Needles. At one point she had a 2 handicap and was proud of her six hole-in-ones as well as the honor bestowed upon her by Duke of a lifetime membership to the Duke Golf Course at her retirement. She also enjoyed leather-craft, wood carving, painting, bird watching, needlepoint, reading, gardening, and especially her dogs, mainly dachshunds. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Phillips Episcopal Church, 403 E. Main St., Durham conducted by Rector Mary Ann Younger. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Jane is survived by one sister, Lynda and husband David of Raleigh; two nephews, David E. Smith, Jr. and wife Melissa of Raleigh and Mark V. Smith of Safety Harbor, Florida; and three nieces and a nephew, Chelsea and Kendall Smith, and Kala and Parker Smith. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at a reception at St. Phillips Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Phillips Episcopal Church, Duke University Athletic Department or a charity of one’s choice.
