Jane Lewis Zollicoffer, 82, died peacefully Monday, February 6, 2012, in Raleigh. Born in Jackson, N.C., on April 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Edmund Wilkins Lewis and the late Jennie Williams Lewis. She attended high school in Raleigh at St. Marys, graduating in 1946, and then went to Sweet Briar College near Amherst, Va., where she graduated in 1950 with a major in history. Following college she moved to Richmond and worked briefly for the Chamber of Commerce. She married Algernon Augustus Zollicoffer Jr. of Henderson on April 11, 1953. Gus Zollicoffer died in 1991.
She is survived by her son, Allison Caulaincourt Zollicoffer, and wife, Anne Rawls Zollicoffer, of Durham, and daughters Jane Zollicoffer Hollowell and husband, Bernard B. Hollowell Jr., of Oriental, Fannie Zollicoffer Mallonee and husband, Gordon Lee Mallonee Jr., of Richmond, and Ellen Zollicoffer Jackson and husband J. Michael Jackson, of Raleigh, and four grandchildren, Wilkins Lewis Zollicoffer, William Rawls Zollicoffer, Mary Corinne Forehand Jackson and Jane Lewis Zollicoffer Jackson.
Mrs. Zollicoffer started life in Henderson a shy bride but was quickly drawn into public life by her husbands bid to become prosecuting attorney. Through that election and those that followed, ultimately landing her husband in the state legislature, she became an expert campaigner, introducing herself to strangers everywhere, right down to the checkout line, and asking for their vote.
Throughout her years in Henderson she was an active member of The Church of the Holy Innocents and volunteered for numerous other civic and charitable organizations. She was a member of the North Carolina chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
An avid reader and lover of poetry, Mrs. Zollicoffer played a vital role in the expansion and improvement of the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson and was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1993 until 2004."She never missed an opportunity to talk to folks about the importance of the library in our community," recalled retired library director Jeanne Fox. "I was always in awe of what she could accomplish and how smoothly she could take control."
In March 2005 Mrs. Zollicoffer moved to Springmoor in Raleigh.
Mrs. Zollicoffer loved to travel and went to Europe numerous times, beginning with the grand tour in 1949, when she made the crossing on the Queen Mary. In the years before he died, she and her husband enjoyed playing golf at Henderson Country Club and elsewhere. The Zollicoffers golf trips took them, among other places, to Mexico, Scotland and California, where Mrs. Zollicoffer birdied the Par 3 seventh hole at Pebble Beach.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Ellen and Michael Jackson, 512 Marlowe Road, in Raleigh.The funeral will be Thursday, February 9, at 2 p.m. at The Church of the Holy Innocents in Henderson conducted by the Rev. Donald A. Lowry. A reception will follow in the Great Hall of the church.
