HENDERSON-Jean Russell Mahaffey, age 79, a resident of 1821 Bane Avenue, died Sunday, August 19, 2012, at her home.Born in Mecklenburg Co., VA, she was the daughter of the late William Hoarce Russell, III and Elizabeth Hunter Russell.She was a school teacher for 35 years, having taught at Kerr Lake School, the Vance County School System, and in the Granville County School System.She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was an ordained Deacon, and a member of the Tippett Sunday School Class.She was also a member and past President of the Henderson Junior Womans Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Sans Souci Literary Society.She was a member of the Community Concert Series, and a longtime volunteer at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev.Keith Benze.Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Mahaffey of the home; two daughters, Katherine Mahaffey of Charlotte and Page Mahaffey Haddow-Green, and husband, Paul of Hope Mills, NC; one brother, William Hoarce Ruussell, IV of Lynchburg, VA; two grandsons, Thomas Haddow-Green and Cameron Haddow-Green; two special care givers, Vernice Macon and Johnnie Cheek; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Elizabeth Marrow.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 2:00 PM in the church parlor at the First Presbyterian Church.At other times they will be at the home at 1821 Bane Avenue.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Paul Haddow-Green, Cameron Haddow-Green, Tommy Riddle, Herman A. Davis Jr., Herman A. Davis III, and Bill Scarlett.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Tippett Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Program, P. O. Box 726, Henderson, NC27536.
