Jeurlene Bartholomew Prechtel, age 79, a resident of Henderson and Cape Carteret, NC died Thursday evening at Franklin Regional Hospital in Louisburg. Born June 11, 1931, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus A. Bartholomew, Sr. and Pauline Hayes Bartholomew of Franklin County.She was the widow of Henry R. Prechtel of Cape Carteret.
A life-long teacher, Jeri received her bachelors degree and masters degree from Atlantic Christian (Barton) College.Until her retirement, she taught kindergarten and first grade in Onslow and Carteret Counties.When the state first added kindergarten classes to all schools, Jeri helped develop the NC State Curriculum for those students.Her dedication and creativity nurtured many young minds in eastern Carolina.Remarkably, every time she went out shopping or to restaurants, those students still recognized their favorite teacher, Mrs. Prechtel.
Jeri is survived by a brother, R. A. Bartholomew, Jr. and wife Ann; a brother-in-law, N.G. Crews III; two nephews, Fleet Crews; Brad Bartholomew and wife Pam; and great niece, Miller Bartholomew all of Henderson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Juanita Bartholomew Crews.
She is also survived by a step-daughter, Gail Prechtel Jones; step grandchildren Christopher Arquino, Matthew Arquino, and Elizabeth Arquino King and husband Billy all of Baltimore.
Jeri was a member of the Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and previously served as president of the Presbyterian Women.She was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the Presbyterian Women.Jeri was also a member and former president of the Carteret County Pilot Club.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, May 15, at 3:00 pm in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tammy Ayscue.On Monday, May 16, graveside services will be conducted by the Reverend Dr. Robert Oltman at 2:00 pm at the Gethsemane Memorial Park in Morehead City.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 15, from 1:30 to 3:00 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.On Monday, May 16, visitation will be held at Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church at 3:00 following graveside services.At other times, the family will be at the home of R.A. and Ann Bartholomew at 1621 Lynne Ave, Henderson.
Jeri was a wonderful friend to many. Her loving, caring way endeared her to those in her family, her church, and her two communities.
