HENDERSON- John Henry Falkner, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 23, 2021. He was born in Henderson on March 12, 1930 to the late Elvin and Ruby Falkner. John was a graduate of Henderson High School and UNC-Chapel Hill where he played in the band and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. John achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a firm believer in the principles of the Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. He also served In the U.S. Army for three years during the Korean War. He was an active member of his community and was a member of the Rotary Club, Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Shrine Club, served as a Mason and served as a director of Kerr Lake
School and First Citizens Bank. He was an owner and operator of Falkner Building Supply in Henderson for many years.
John was a loyal member of First United Methodist Church. He served as
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Staff Parrish Committee, church Treasurer and served as president of The Men’s Bible Class and Fellowship Class. John was a kind, giving, friendly and loyal husband, father and grandfather. He will always be remembered for his wonderful smile and his infectious laugh. He enjoyed traveling extensively with Joan, spending time at Emerald Isle and attending sporting events and activities involving his grandchildren. John loved his family dearly and was happiest when he was surrounded by them. He will always be remembered as a true southern gentleman.
He is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joan of 62 years, his three children, John Henry Falkner (Elizabeth); Joseph Elvin Falkner (Julia); Mary Falkner Ross (Paul); grandchildren Cameron Scott Falkner (Sydney); John Byron Falkner (Alex); Mark Seybert Falkner; Joseph Coleman Falkner (Sara); Rebecca Falkner Scott (Frank); Brooks William Falkner; Mary Hannah Weiner (Scott); Haley Ross Borden (Will); great-grandchildren Allie Grace Elizabeth Falkner, Collins Ann Falkner, Joseph Grady Falkner and John Arthur Weiner. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Dot Hicks Barber and a nephew Joseph William
Barber III (Marianne) and several great nephews.
The family would like to extend special gratitude to Roy Burroughs, Ruby Venable and the staff at Senior Citizen’s Home for their support and loving care. A graveside service celebrating John’s life will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Tuesday, April 27 at 2:00 by Dr. Marion D. Lark. The family will receive friends following the service at Elmwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in his memory to the Mission Fund at First United
Methodist Church, 114 Church Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
