John "J.J." Junius Matthews

Date of Service: Sunday, October 17, 2021 Time of Service: 2:00 PM HENDERSON- John Junius "J.J." Matthews, 94, of Boddie Street, died Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the Durham VA Hospital. Born in Vance County on January 2, 1927, he was the son of the late David Lee Matthews and Julia Lee West Matthews. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII. He was also a member of Grace Baptist Church and founding member of the Afton Gun Club. A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM in the New Sandy Creek Church Cemetery by Rev. George Williams. John is survived by his wife, Dorothy Marlene Kittrell Matthews of the home; his daughter, Patricia Ann Munn and husband Raymond of Henderson; his son, John Robert Matthews and wife, Crystal of Henderson; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Sams of Henderson. He was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Norman Matthews; two brothers, Jesse Matthews and Wayne Matthews; and three sisters, Louise Varker, Leona Williams and Marie Manning. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Afton Gun Club, C/O John Matthews, 746 Boddie Street, Henderson, NC 27536. Anyone wishing to view J.J.’s body may do so on Saturday from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM at J.M. White Funeral Home.
