HENDERSON-Johnnie Eddie Newton, Jr. age 73, a resident of 708 Berry Street, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014.Born in Vance County on February 5, 1941, he was the son of the late Johnnie Eddie Newton, Sr. and Gladys Cobb Newton.He was a Veteran of the United States Army and was retired after 30 years from the NC Department of Corrections and 22 years from Variety Wholesalers.
Johnnie attended South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Pearce Newton of the home; two daughters, Deborah N. Colenda and husband, Steve and Rita N. Smith and husband, James of Henderson; his grandchildren, Kristy Murphy and fianc, John ONeal, Wayne Murphy and wife Chelsea, Eddie Smith, Lydia Smith, Hannah ONeal, and Jonathan ONeal; two sisters, Joyce Darnell, and Shirley Craft and husband, Steve of Henderson; two brothers, W. M. Newton and wife, Pat of Pensacola, FL and Doug Newton and wife, Scarlette of Henderson; one sister in law, Mary Swanson and husband Robert of White Level; six nieces; and four nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Sherman Newton.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 pm at J. M. White
Funeral Home.At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Kevin Boone, Kevin Murphy, Earl Darnell, Tony Tart, Ronnie Currin, and Britt Sams.
