HENDERSON-Joseph Hill Edwards, better known as "Papa Joe", a resident of 30 Hillandale Drive, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016, at his home with his family by his side after several years of declining health.Born on October 14, 1938 in Franklin County and was the son of the late Hill Thomas Edwards and Lillian Jackson Edwards. Joe served in the North Carolina National Guard, and was retired from Laurens Glass Co. where he worked for more than 42 years as a mechanic.An avid fan of his grandchildrens baseball games, he hardly ever missed any of their baseball games until his declining health prevented him from attending.Even when he was in declining health he made it to the Youth Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky to watch both his grandsons play ball.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 13, 2016 at 7 pm in J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Eddie Nutt and the Rev. Wayne Clarke.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Blackmon Edwards of the home; one son, Dale Edwards and wife, Denise of Oxford; one daughter, Tonya Edwards Hester and husband, Mickey of Oxford; three grandchildren, Caitlin Ann West, Zachary Chase Hester, and Joshua Dale Edwards; one brother, Benjamin Franklin Edwards of Middleburg; and two sisters, Sylvia Edwards Goss of Oxford and Mary Thomas Edwards Wynne of Henderson.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Othela Edwards Moody, Eva Edwards Elmore, and Mary Alice Edwards Harper; and one brother, Thomas Edwards.
The family will receive friends Monday from 5:30 until 7 pm at J. M. White Funeral Home.At other times they will be at the home.
Joe was avid about his grandchildrens baseball, so in lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Joes memory to the Joe Edwards Memorial Baseball Fund, c/o of Union Bank, PO Box 429, Oxford, NC27565 to continue their time on the field.
