HENDERSON-Joseph Franklin "Joe" Lassiter, age 87, a resident of 1432 Peace Street, died Saturday, January 26, 2013, at his home with members of his loving family at his side.Born on September 19, 1925 in Vance County, he was the son of the late James Franklin Lassiter and Esther Neal Lassiter.Mr. Lassiter was a Veteran of the United States Army 87th Infantry Division serving under General George Patton in the European Theater, and was the recipient of several medals, including the Purple Heart.
He was a retired clerk for the United States Postal Service.A lifelong member of First Congregational Christian Church, he served as a former Deacon, Trustee, Usher, and member of the Mens Fellowship.
A private burial with Military Honors will be held Wednesday in the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 PM at First Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. George Williams and Dr. Ron Cava.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Ayscue Lassiter of the home; one daughter, Mary Jo Wilson and husband Frederick H. Wilson of Henderson; two sons, Larry W. Lassiter and wife, Krista Perry Lassiter of Wilson, and Robert F. Lassiter and wife, Marilyn Gregg Lassiter of Henderson; one sister, Mildred L. Wilson of Lake Gaston; seven grandchildren, Jay and Ginger Lassiter, Mandy and Wayne Sullivan, Paige and Wes Hill, Michael and Lisa Harrison, William "Bill" Harrison, Jennifer Lassiter, Kate Lassiter and Fiance Josh Parker; and two step-grandchildren, Rick Wilson and Dan and Elizabeth Wilson; and seven great grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Effie Lassiter Harris; and one great granddaughter, Abigail Hope Sullivan.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at First Congregational Christian Church and at other times at the home at 1432 Peace Street.
