HENDERSON-Joseph Alvin Mahaffey, age 87, a resident of 1821 Bane Avenue, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, in a local nursing home.Born on January 23, 1928 in Lancaster County, SC, he was the son of the late Sidney Belk Mahaffey and Edna Page Mahaffey and his step-mother, Maisie Mahaffey.Joe was a Veteran of the Untied States Air Force serving during the Korean War.He was retired from the former Carolina Power & Light Co. where he was the Engineering Manager, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he formerly served as a Deacon, Elder, and Sunday School Teacher of the Tippett Class.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Keith Benze.Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Katherine Mahaffey of Charlotte, and Page Mahaffey Haddow-Green and husband, Paul, of Hope Mills; and two grandsons, Thomas Joseph Haddow-Green, and Cameron Paul Haddow-Green; and his faithful care givers, Cookie Chavis Cheek, Sherby Hargrove, Josephine Alston, and Josephine Robinson.He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, his wife, Jean Russell Mahaffey, one sister, Betty M. Wallace; and four brothers, Gene, Paul, James, and Elridge Mahaffey.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 until 11 am at First Presbyterian Church.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Thomas Joseph Haddow-Green, Cameron Paul Haddow-Green, Paul Haddow-Green, Frank Irvin, Bill Scarlett, and Tom Riddle,
