Kathryn Fulton Alston died peacefully on March 10, 2015 at the age of 88, surrounded by her family.Kathryn was born on October 24, 1926 in Elkin, North Carolina.She was the youngest child of the late George Henry and Clyde Snow Fulton.Kathryn grew up in Roanoke, Virginia.She attended St. Marys Junior College, followed by Sweet Briar College.At St. Marys, Kathryn was president of the Student Government Association, as well as a member of Honor Council, Hall Council, the Legislative Body, Choir, the French Club, the Volley Ball all-stars, the Circle, and Belles Staff.While at Sweet Briar, Kathryn was on the Social Committee, the Convocation Committee, the Classical Club and the Funds Committee.
Kathryn loved to sing and was a former member of the choir at The Church of The Holy Innocents Episcopal Church for many years, and formerly served as Secretary to the Episcopal Church Women.She was a former member the Alma club, the Henderson Garden Club, the Tuesday Club, Sip and Dip, and Sans Souci, and formerly served on the State Board of Social Services.
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Alston Palamar and husband, Richard Chase Palamar of Henderson, Sally Alston Barnett of Durham, andKathryn Alston Blackburn of Henderson; one son, Walter James Alston III and wife, Deborah Helms Alston of Louisville KY; grandchildren, Chase Palamar and wife, Katherine, John Palamar and wife, Maria, Christopher Palamar and wife, Michaela, Jackson Blackburn, Kathryn Blackburn, Bennett Alston, and Gray Alston; great-grandchildren Mercer, Bond, Good, Hazen, and Gael Palamar; and one sister, Jean Fulton Wingerd of Chambersburg ,Pa.
In addition to her parents, Kathryn was predeceased by her husband, Walter James Alston, Jr.; and her brother George Henry Fulton, Jr.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 3 pm at The Church of The Holy Innocents by the Rev. Donald Lowery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Great Hall at the Church.
