HENDERSON - Mr. Lebert Andre Howes, Sr., age 88, of 216 Yowland Road, Henderson, NC, died Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his home surrounded by family.Lebert was born in Micro, NC on August 13, 1929 to the late Barden Jackson and Ophelia Batten Howes.
Mr. Howes earned his bachelors degree in English and History from Atlantic Christian College where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.He attended N.C. State University where he earned R.O.T.C. Sergeant before transferring to Atlantic Christian College. Mr. Howes earned his Masters degree in Education Administration from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill by attending night classes after work and on weekends.
He enjoyed teaching and taught 8th grade in Kenly, 2 years at Meadow High School, 4 years teaching 8th grade at E.M. Rollins School, and 4 years as Principal at Epsom school.He served as a Safety Representative for the Department of Motor Vehicles teaching school bus driving and safety in Vance, Granville, Warren, and Franklin counties for over 37 years. After retiring from working with the state, Mr. Howes worked at Frazco Inc. selling real estate.
Mr. Howes was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Henderson and enjoyed teaching Sunday School. He was active in the community and was a member of the Henderson Kiwanis Club, known as its "cheerleader", he served in many capacities, and was a member of the Board of Directors, a past President, and was awarded Kiwanian of the Year in 2008. He was also a past Lieutenant Governor for North Carolina District Optimist Club, President of the Henderson Optimist Club, Charter member and past President of the Epsom Lions Club, and member of the John H. Mills Masonic Lodge of Epsom. He loved helping others and enjoyed volunteering at the local Mens shelter, Lunch Buddies at Pinkston Street school, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, and leading Camp E-Ten-Etu campers in cheers at Durham Bulls and Mudcats baseball games. The staff and campers at Camp E-Ten-Etu awarded him with the Hero award for his devoted support. He was awarded a certificate from North Carolinas Forest Stewardship Program for his resource management of wildlife and forestry preservation for this and future generations.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Henderson by the Rev. Terry Huffines.
He is survived by one son, Lebert Andre Howes, Jr. and wife Sonya of Roanoke, Virginia; two daughters Audrey Howes Currin and husband Danny of Henderson, and Aimee Howes Butterfield and husband Kevin of Norfolk, Virginia; grandchildren, Lebert Andre Howes, III and Kei, Andrea Howes, Frazier Howes and Sydney, Christian Howes, Jessica Creech and Brandon, and Daniel Currin and Emma; great-grandchildren, Nixie-Blu Pucci-Howes and Slade MacDaniel Creech; sister, Lavere Williamson and brother, Frank Howes; sister-in-law, Jackie Hoyle and husband Wilson; brothers-in-law, Opie Frazier and wife Katherine and Harold Frazier and wife Jane; and his faithful friend and companion, Linda Stanely.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Martha Mabry Frazier Howes and siblings Dorothy Holden, Adele Giles, Ruby Whitley, Faith Wallace, Alton Howes, B.J. Howes, and Bobbie Howes.
We would like to thank Community Care and Hospice for their help during the last few weeks of our fathers sickness. We offer our thanks and appreciation to Carolyn Ayscue and to Carolyn Pettaway and her wonderful girls that stayed with and took care of Daddy and us through to his crossing over especially Joyce Harrington, Angie Walker, and Pam Rainey.
The family will receive friends following the service in the First United Methodist Church and at other times at the home.
Serving as honorary pall bearers will be all members of the Henderson Kiwanis Club.
